First EU member state with a national AI law complementing the AI Act

Italy became the first EU member state to adopt a national AI law (Law 132/2025, in force October 2025), layering national rules — health, work, justice, child protection, and criminal liability for harmful deepfakes — on top of the EU AI Act, and designating AgID and ACN as national AI authorities.
